Wow is about all I can say about these Peep-Toe Platform Pumps from Lanvin. They’re a little pricey at retail, $1005 at Barneys, but as we know, that doesn’t mean you can’t find them for less. They’re so tempting because they’re just so classic and elegant and sexy, all at the same time. They don’t look like just the latest thing, they look like they will be in style years from now, too: timeless.  I’d have no problem going out in these gorgeous shoes anytime of the day, either, and I can see using them with everything from an elegant dress to a pair of jeans. Earlier this summer at the third annual “Cartier Love Day” lighting ceremony in New York City, Rihanna wore these stunning Christian Louboutin buckled ankle boots. Love the buckles and the over-all sleek, timeless look of these boots. Made of black suede, they feature a pointed toe, red sole, and made (of couse!) in Italy. Women seem to have a special relationship with shoes. Why do we want to have so many of them? Why do we want as many of the really expensive ones as we can get? What’s the point?

The answer is that there are down-right practical reasons mixed in with completely ridiculous ones. This is of course completely subjective, but If I had to come up with a short list of reasons to explain all of this to a skeptic, I’d boil them down to

1. We have a lot of different clothes, outfits for different kinds of weather, styles, colors, fabrics, etc. Does anyone honestly think that one or two pairs of shoes are going to go with all of that? That’s pure crazyness. We need shoes to go with any unexpected combination of clothes.
2. Outside, exterior conditions can dictate what kind of footwear you should be wearing. On a hot summer day sandals are just perfect, but you wouldn’t wear them out for a night on the town. Boots are just right at times, but then again sneakers are ideal for a long walk.
3. It isn’t all a practical matter. Sometimes it’s just a matter of fun. It’s a great feeling to slip into the latest fashions and show them off to the world. Don’t apologize for one of the greatest pleasures a girl can have!
4. Going out and shopping for shoes is a blast, all the more so when you can do it with friends. A love of shoes for their own sake is a beautiful thing. Sharing it with somebody else who feels the same way is even better.
5. Different kinds of shoes are better for your feet at different times. If you try to shove your feet into the same one or two pairs of shoes you aren’t doing them any favors. Each activity has an ideal shoe and you want to be ready for anything!
6. The best things that shoes can do for you is allow you to express who you are. Anything that helps you show the world how you feel, who you are, what you like can only be a good thing.
